This printer is designed to only work with cartridges that contain a fresh or refilled HP chip, and it employs dynamic security mechanisms to block cartridges with a non-HP chip. These protections will continue to work as intended thanks to periodic firmware updates, which will also stop any previously functional cartridges. The use of refilled, reprocessed, and reused cartridges is made possible via a recycled HP chip
